Nothing Ever Really Changes for Irrational Environmentalists

Fifteen Foolish Forecasts: How did environmentalists get it so wrong on Earth Day 1970?

by editor on April 22, 2011

What was once Earth Day has now morphed into Earth Hour and Earth Week. The success of the celebration can only be explained by the fact that no one ever bothers to go back to check the accuracy of the eco-wackos’ past predictions.

For example, the predictions made at the first Earth Day in 1970 were wrong. No, wrong isn’t a strong enough word. They were spectacularly wrong. Let’s cover all the tenses and say they were wrong, they are wrong, and then make our own prediction and say they will be wrong in the future.

Here are some of the hilarious, remarkably wrong predictions made on Earth Day 1970.

“Civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.”

• George Wald, Harvard Biologist

“We are in an environmental crisis which threatens the survival of this nation, and of the world as a suitable place of human habitation.”
• Barry Commoner, Washington University biologist

“By…[1975] some experts feel that food shortages will have escalated the present level of world hunger and starvation into famines of unbelievable proportions. Other experts, more optimistic, think the ultimate food-population collision will not occur until the decade of the 1980s.”
• Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist

“Demographers agree almost unanimously on the following grim timetable: by 1975 widespread famines will begin in India; these will spread by 1990 to include all of India, Pakistan, China and the Near East, Africa. By the year 2000, or conceivably sooner, South and Central America will exist under famine conditions….By the year 2000, thirty years from now, the entire world, with the exception of Western Europe, North America, and Australia, will be in famine.”
• Peter Gunter, professor, North Texas State University

“It is already too late to avoid mass starvation.”
• Denis Hayes, chief organizer for Earth Day

“Scientists have solid experimental and theoretical evidence to support…the following predictions: In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution…by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half….”
• Life Magazine, January 1970

“Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make. The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years.”
• Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist

“At the present rate of nitrogen buildup, it’s only a matter of time before light will be filtered out of the atmosphere and none of our land will be usable.”
• Kenneth Watt, Ecologist

“Air pollution…is certainly going to take hundreds of thousands of lives in the next few years alone.”
• Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist

“We are prospecting for the very last of our resources and using up the nonrenewable things many times faster than we are finding new ones.”
• Martin Litton, Sierra Club director

“By the year 2000, if present trends continue, we will be using up crude oil at such a rate…that there won’t be any more crude oil. You’ll drive up to the pump and say, `Fill ‘er up, buddy,’ and he’ll say, `I am very sorry, there isn’t any.’”
• Kenneth Watt, Ecologist

“Man must stop pollution and conserve his resources, not merely to enhance existence but to save the race from intolerable deterioration and possible extinction.”
• New York Times editorial, the day after the first Earth Day

“Dr. S. Dillon Ripley, secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, believes that in 25 years, somewhere between 75 and 80 percent of all the species of living animals will be extinct.”
• Sen. Gaylord Nelson

“We have about five more years at the outside to do something.”
• Kenneth Watt, ecologist

“The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.”
• Kenneth Watt, Ecologist

Today, Earth Day, the eco-wackos will surely get their day moment in the spotlight and their soundbites on the nightly news. They’ll predict a future even grimmer than they predicted 41 years ago.

And they’ll be just as wrong 41 years from now. Source: Reason.com

Chart of Actual Temperatures

07-17-2012. This chart shows temperatures over the past 2000 years. Notice the overall cooling trend. Climate is changing, but man is not causing the change. Things were warmest right after the flood, 4200 years ago. It was the warm temperatures caused by several sources during the flood that warmed up the ocean waters, resulting in the ice age. Things have been cooling ever since, with fluctuations up an down along the way. Simply put, it is not logical or scientific to base climate change thoughts on 25 years of data.

Nobel Prize-winning Physicist resigns Over Global Warming

09-15-2011. The American Physical Society, comprised of professional physicists, has taken their first political position. Laws of physics are expected to be challenged all the time. That is the role of science, scientists must constantly attempt to falsify the laws. Every year, scores of experiments are done to test gravity, relativity and all the other laws of physics and chemistry. But, now it appears that the idea of man-made catastrophic global warming is unchallengeable. A leading physicist resigns from the organization because it has become a political organization instead of a science organization. Read all about it here.

11 Years of NASA Data

07-29-2011. NASA has just released 11 years of satellite data. The mission of the satellite was to measure how much heat is leaving the earth. It appears that all the climate models are incorrect in their assumptions of heat loss. As a result they all overestimate, by a large margin, the temperature gains. In other words, they over estimate how fast the earth is and will heat up (it is actually cooling right now) See all the details here.

Extreme Arctic Warming

11-22-1922. (AP) Global Warming printed in The Washington Post

The Arctic ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report to
the Commerce Department yesterday from Consulafft, at Bergen, Norway. Reports from fishermen, seal hunters, and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone. Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes. Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm. Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared. Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds. Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise and make most coastal cities uninhabitable.

08-18-2010. The so-called review of ClimateGate by the "science community" is a farce. See the review of the review here.

Global Warming has been renamed Global Climate Change
because the earth is now cooling.

08-28-2009. Australia has defeated a Cap and Trade law by a sound majority. One of the key reasons is a thick book that shows the actual science behind climate change. You can read about this book and its author here. Here is just one fact of science Al Gore has to ignore: "This has occurred on all scales of time. This century temperature has been decreasing, yet CO2 has been increasing. Over the last 150 years, temperature has increased (1860-1880, 1910-1940, 1976-1998) and decreased (1880-1910, 1940-1976, and 2002 to the present), yet CO2 has been increasing. If CO2 has been increasing, how can CO2-driven warming have driven cooling? Over historical times, there were the Minoan, Roman, and Medieval warmings, when temperature was a few degrees higher than at present. Sea level did not change. Over archaeological time, ice cores show that temperature peaks some 800 years before CO2 peaks, hence CO2 could not have driven temperature rise.

11-2-2008. There has long been a noted correlation between sun activity (sunspots) and global warmth. During the "little ice age" sunspots were rare. During warmer periods, sunspots were more frequent. The problem is no one could come up with a reason that sunspot activity would influence earth temperature. There is no "mechanism." A mechanism has now been established by Henrik Svensmark which has been published in Astronomy & Geophysics 48(1): 1.19. You can read about this complete theory of cosmoclimatology here. Let's hope that the radical elements in the environmental movement and the politicians will listen to good empirical research instead of propaganda.

On this page, you can view a 50 minute video that discusses much of the data we actually know about global warming, the greenhouse effect, how global climate change models are poorly constructed, and the proper Christian viewpoint on protecting the environment.

7-20-2008. A division of The American Physical Society, a professional organization of 50,000 professional physicists, has now taken a stand that man has no influence in global warming. The most solid comment in the article is scientific: "Monckton, who was the science advisor to Britain's Thatcher administration, says natural variability is the cause of most of the Earth's recent warming.  "In the past 70 years the Sun was more active than at almost any other time in the past 11,400 years ... Mars, Jupiter, Neptune’s largest moon, and Pluto warmed at the same time as Earth." Read the article here:

7-18-08. One of the creators of Australia's carbon accounting model of greenhouse gas (FullCAM) which is the model Australia uses to measure their compliance with the Kyoto Protocol has looked at the real evidence and now says humans are not causing global warming. In fact, he points out, the warming trend stopped in 2001. Last year global temperatures dropped 0.6C degrees. He also discusses ice core data and the lack of finding a greenhouse "hotspot." Check out the article now.

The environment is a concern to all (or at least it should be). In 1970, the great Christian apologist, Francis A. Schaeffer, wrote a book called Pollution and the Death of Man in which he presented the Christian view of the environment. We have always been concerned about cleaning up the environment, and now as Christians we are not just in favor of protecting the environment, we are compelled, for a simple reason. The earth is God's creation and He gave us the job of tending, watching over, His creation. I am please that, as a country, we have made such great progress. I remember my mom telling about hanging out the laundry in the 1930s. It went up white and came down dry, but gray from all the coal smoke. We have come a long way and must never let up on progress.

Here is the big surprise. We have heard this before, but this site has the references. Water vapor is the biggest source of the greenhouse effect! That is why the output of the sun affects warming of the earth. Evaporate more water and you get more greenhouse effect. Read all about it here. Good info on this page of their site too!

Reid Bryson was one of the very first to propose that man might possibly have an effect on climate... 40 years ago. He presented the idea before that American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was laughed off the platform, but kept studying the idea. Now he laughs at those who propose that man is causing the greenhouse effect. Among the FACTS he presents in this article are: 80% of reflective heat is absorbed by water vapor in the first 30 feet (water vapor is what actually causes the greenhouse effect). How much heat does CO2 absorb? .0008% "You can go outside and spit and have the same effect as doubling CO2."

Things have gotten out of hand. In England, the homeland of the modern atheist movement and materialism, students must be issued a warning before watching Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. Why? The courts ruled that the movie contains at least 9 inaccuracies and therefore is primarily propaganda, not science. Al got a Nobel Prize nonetheless. Here is a site that lists 11 errors found by the court. Here is a site that lists 9 errors found by the court.

There is not a consensus on global warming. If there was, Mr. Gore would not have to lie or make up "facts." Those who say humans have little to no effect on global warming are not allowed a public forum. Real, open, discussion has become a thing of the past when science becomes a bedfellow of politics. If you have not seen the scientific evidence (you probably haven't), we have a page for you. As we write this on 05/20/08, over 31,000 American scientists have signed a petition urging the U.S. government to reject the Kyoto and other agreements built on political correctness instead of solid scientific evidence. You will find details of the petition and the scientific evidence that is ignored by those that wish to use the environment as a political tool.

Here is an interesting video of a lecture that shows how environmentalism is the new religion of the materialists. He draws a parallel with creationists, but note that the comparison he gives of the environmentalists is actually of evolutionists rather than creationists.

NEW!! Just in on 6-19-2008: ScienceDaily.com reports ice core evidence of a 22 degree change in temperature in just 50 years occurred only 14,700 years ago. And another big change 11,700 years ago. Darn those Vikings!

There are so many great web sites that actually give facts with charts and figures. Advocates of man-induced global warming always limit data to the recent past. Here are some great presentations on youtube:
